Bioluminescence @ Christmas in the Highlands Glen Innes
Bioluminescence was invited to be a part of an event called “Behind Every Window a Story” as a part of Christmas in the Highlands in Glen Innes
Hello Glen Innes! After a mega drive Bioluminescence and @eye_candy_portals hit the ground running straight into Content Creation Day! We settled in to our amazing creative base @thehighlandshub an awesome local co-working/workshop space! The group of local young people that signed up for the ride got straight into exploring the biodiversity of the local park and finding things they had never noticed before. This is the magic of creating – the opportunity to slow down and look at the world around us to see the things we walk past without a second thought as we rush through our lives. Finding small skinks, watching magpies play, seeing the light reflected off a running stream, the camera gives us permission to stop and watch these things and share the results with others allowing us to share our vision of the world. The Bioluminoids took their footage and started editing in @lumafusion.codm building on the idea of making the ordinary extraordinary. By the end of the day a metric tonne of clips had been made and we were ready to put it all together on day 2. When the sun went down we took the opportunity to do a quick projector test. A big thanks to @artsnorthwest for the invite, @christmasinthehighlands for having us and @gleninneshighland council for logistics and set up support.
Day two and it was all systems go! Finalising clips for content (89 clips and counting!), straight into learning the projection mapping process using @heavym_software and @resolume Avenue for clip launching. A mega safety briefing and discussion on the site plan got everyone realising that even fun comes with responsibility! We had three sites to work with including a massive inflatable installation we built using tentacles and a jellyfish to make our own kraken inspired Totem! We are hoping to get the amazing @daymondarts to reprise his role of the voice of the Totem! As the sun went down we got busy running leads, bumping in projectors, setting up laptops and making sure everything was safe including going over our road crossing protocols and safe working as we are mapping from the pedestrian traffic island. On to the mapping! Three sites meant there was plenty for everyone to do. The @highlands_hub_glen_innes, the old cinema that now hosts @rhubarbrosie florist and the Totem. @eye_candy_portals got the Beyard out and we smashed it out with everything mapped, a few sequences preprepared and everyone feeling comfortable with operating the tech and their roles for the performance on Saturday night. A few last minute jobs to be done including exporting a few final clips, running power to the scaffold once the roads close after 11am and a few tweaks to the projection maps and @christmasinthehighlands will be on!
Safety safety safety was the start of the day. We talk safety right through the whole Bioluminescence process but the event day it is ramped up as the Bioluminoids prepare to welcome hundreds of their fellow community members who have come to see their unique video projection mapping installation to make sure that our guests can enjoy the show. We had three sites – the @highlands_hub_glen_innes building, the @rhubarbrosie Florist which is the old cinema and the Totem made from inflatable tentacles and a jellyfish to create a fun projection map surface that was brought to life with their videos and the spoken word poetry of @daymondarts through #samplr app. Some highlights were a Bioluminoid tweaking a star field shader to create falling snow, another one getting right into the @entropyandsons Recursion Studio video synthesiser while building a cool collage of found objects on the @liquidlightlab large colour dancer turntable. Everyone one did an amazing job keeping the show going for hours while keeping it fresh and evolving. The crew stayed to help pack up and followed the “leave no trace” principle. A big thanks to @morallackley the fearless creative director behind the Every Window project. Thanks to @eye_candy_portals for being the best inventor maker facilitator. Thanks to the parents that even rolled their sleeves up and pitched in with the pack up! Thanks to @christmasinthehighlands for having us and the @highlands_hub_glen_innes for hosting us!
